Coaching
Brainstorming
This is a simple but enjoyable and very rewarding activity to use at the
‘Options’ step in the coaching process. It introduces brainstorming,
focusing on the most basic form of brainstorming ignoring the standard
‘rules’ of how to do it, and focusing instead on getting motivated
results.
This activity can be used with any participants who must work, either
alone or in a group, to solve a problem, work towards achieving a goal,
or who simply need to look at an issue from a different viewpoint.
The scene is set by referring to the abilities of Leanardo da Vinci—an
all round genius who ‘thought outside the box’. The participants then
use their own innate creativity to brainstorm on a topic of their
choice. This is used as an example to show them how creative they are.
Potential solutions. After a brief discussion, they each take one of the
potential solutions and repeat the brainstorming process. The exercise
is reviewed and the activity closed.

Analysing Complex Issues
Some issues are too complex to be explored with simple coaching
techniques. In such circumstances, a more sophisticated approach should
be employed as part of the coaching process.
This activity deals with two of the most useful and simple techniques to
exploit: Force field Analysis and fish bone diagrams, which are simple
to learn but powerful in their application. This generates a lot of
positive feeling, and because the participants work on real-world issues
is found to be valuable learning.
This can be used with any group who will be coaching others through
complex issues and, therefore, must understand their ‘Reality’ clearly
enough to solve a problem or achieve a goal.

Coaching and Project Management
This powerful session to be used at the beginning of a new project uses
coaching principle principles to ensure the project team owns, and is
focused on, the project goal, as well as being focused on the team’s own
approach to the project
This activity can be used with any group that is about to set up and
manage a project where high quality team member input is required and it
can be applied to a project on any topic, for example mounting a sales
campaign or installing a new system.
Participants establish their approach to teamwork, identifying team
qualities and group rules, the GROW sequence can then be used to define
the project goal.
