What is the definition of Life Coaching
Learn more about Life Coaching

Life Coaching originated in the USA over 10 years ago but has more recently gained public recognition in Britain where it is enjoying phenomenal growth as more and more people discover the advantages for themselves. Life Coaching is sweeping the country invading so many aspects of corporate and personal life that you almost wonder how we ever managed before. More and more people are experiencing an eagerness to become a professional coach or develop exceptional coaching skills.

Some individuals choose to build a very rewarding part-time or full-time career specialising as a Life Coach. Others have seen that Life Coaching Skills are being actively sought as a ‘qualification’ by companies wanting well-trained, skilled Personnel, Supervisory, Customer Care or Management Staff. In fact, Manager Coach is now recognised as a position although until recently it was unheard of.

Not to be confused with therapy or counselling, Life Coaching involves the development of a special relationship between the coach and the client which, rather than looking to the past, plans for the future. As apposed to focusing on one or two past events it has a more holistic approach aimed at dealing with all matters effecting the client’s achievement of a fulfilling, successful and stress-free life. Using the old adage ‘United we stand…’ coaching provides a confidential, non-judgemental, impartial and completely personalised support structure that enables the individual to achieve far more than they ever would ‘going it alone’. Clients come from all walks of life, and are unique in their desires, priorities and needs. The Coach guides them towards identifying their own personal potential, clarifying their objectives and seeing their future clearly - undistorted by people, emotions or events. Having a supportive family and friends is invaluable but these people cannot offer advice that isn’t clouded by their own wishes, issues or problems.

    Gerard O'Donovan's Definition of Coaching

    Author: Gerard O'Donovan

“Coaching is about performing at your best through the individual and private assistance of someone who will challenge, stimulate and guide you to keep growing.”

Essentially it is about helping you to reach self-actualisation - a point at which you not only truly know yourself but within this knowledge possess a feeling of comfort with and understanding of the person you discover.

Your coach engages in a collaborative alliance with you to establish and clarify purpose and goals and to develop a plan of action to achieve those goals. They will establish an understanding of what is really important to you in life and subsequently enable you to take charge of your life; to construct and act upon action plans that will help you to realise these priorities. Put simply, coaching is about helping you to create and work towards the grandest version of the greatest personal vision you have; to achieve success - success being the continuous realisation of a worthy goal or ideal.

You will be guided through a detailed process beginning with the need to re-evaluate your present position, who you really are, where your priorities lie and the need to make a definite and conscious decision about the future you would like to create. With the help of a personal life coach you really can re-shape your life, overcome all the obstacles and live the life that you love.

Coaching is essentially a conversation - that is, a dialogue between you and your coach. Within a productive, results-oriented context, coaching involves coaching you to access what you already know. The reality is that you have the answers to all your questions - asked and unasked. Your coach provides the essential assistance, support and encouragement to seek and find these answers; to guide you towards asking the right questions, and deal with the answers.

Coaching also incorporates learning and yet a coach is not a teacher and will not necessarily know how to do things better than you but this does not matter. Your coach will observe patterns - set the stage for new actions and then work with you to put these new, more successful actions into place. This involves learning through various coaching techniques such as listening, reflecting, asking questions and providing information. Finally, and most importantly, your coach will help you learn how to become self-correcting and self-generating. That is, you will learn how to correct your own behaviour, generate your own questions and find your own answers.

Why should I choose Noble Manhattan for my life coach training?

Noble Manhattan was formed in 1993, long before most of the Life Coaching schools of today ever existed. It specialises in Personal and Corporate Development, of which Coaching is an important element. After all, if you are coaching someone what are you trying to do if not help them to develop and grow. And to become a coach you have to go through a serious learning curve which extends the boundaries of your knowledge, promotes personal skills necessary for the work and introduces new ideas, concepts and skills. For both the coach and the coachee the process is one of personal growth and attainment.

Of course, one of the main reasons why you should choose Noble Manhattan is that its Principal is Gerard O'Donovan. Widely recognised as a leader in the field Gerard has personally been involved in the training of more coaches than anyone else in Europe. Consulting as Director of Coaching for a large UK based company he was responsible for the structure, implementation and operation of their coaching course, support system and administration. He then founded The UK College of Life Coaching Ltd where he once again created a great infrastructure and training programme which, once established, he felt able to leave to the management of others. However, although accepting that the large corporations have their place in the market he believes that the training of coaches should be more in tune with coaching itself. Although coaching skills are implemented by many people in the course of their work coaching is generally a one-to-one, private and very personal service. So, can you really train someone to be a coach through mass instruction? Gerard doesn't think so. He feels that it should be much more personal-tuition based. Just as each coachee is an individual with their own needs and challenges, so each coach has unique requirements. He wants to offer his personal support to each coach trained by Noble Manhattan. This is why only very small numbers of coaches will be trained each year and these will be supported by not only Gerard but also a large network of qualified, experienced coaches.

Noble Manhattan prides itself on its supremely high standards of training. The beauty of our coach training is that Gerard is so extensively experienced in creating coach training systems that he has been able to take the very best ideas whilst leaving aside the less desirable ones. The NM courses are the result of much fine-tuning and are indisputably fantastic!!!

Because we understand that each of us has differing levels of free time, finance and need we have structured three training programmes that satisfy these different requirements. Take a look at the programme details page to review the different options and decide which suits you best
